Joyce never disappoints. The winemaker who is the owner’s son really knows what he’s doing. Not only are the grapes grown and handled organically but they are grown on a small vineyard, which “struggles” to produce 3/4 of a ton. Joyce consistently produces an exceptional Merlot, and this 2008 does not disappoint. It is a pure Merlot and the grape is honored here in all its’ powerful complexity and fullness. It has a velvety finish and a bold entry, a gorgeous nose filled with the prerequisite flavors one would look for in a very finely crafted Merlot.
The Joyce website describes their Merlot as “complex nose of layered berries which leads into rich elegant ripe blackberry, boysenberry and finishes off with a hint of cedar, toasty oak”, and I cannot argue with that.
Look for it at Joyce Vineyards.
